Random England Address Generator

A random England address generator produces fictional postal addresses formatted to Royal Mail conventions, using real England post towns and postcode districts, for use as software test data.

England contains the large majority of the United Kingdom's postcode areas, from the eight London areas (E, EC, N, NW, SE, SW, W, WC) to single-letter city areas such as B (Birmingham), M (Manchester), L (Liverpool) and S (Sheffield). This generator draws on 407 real postcode districts across 41 post towns in England, formats every result to Royal Mail "Clear Addressing" rules and pairs it with a telephone number from an Ofcom range reserved for fiction. Every address is synthetic and is intended for QA automation, form validation and database seeding.

Postal notes

  • Addresses in England are written with the post town in capitals on the penultimate line and the postcode last.
  • Royal Mail no longer requires a county on any addressed mail where a valid postcode is present.

Frequently asked questions

Are these real England addresses?

No. The post towns, postcode districts and ceremonial countys are real, but the building numbers, street pairings and recipient names are fictional and the inward half of each postcode is generated. Nothing produced here is a live delivery point, so the addresses must never be used to send post.

Which postcode areas cover England?

This generator covers 48 postcode areas in England: B, BA, BD, BH, BN, BS, CA, CB, CH, CV, DE, E, EC, EX, FY, GL, HU, IP, L, LE, LS, LU, M, MK, N, NE, NG, NN, NR, NW, OX, PE, PL, PO, PR, RG, S, SE, SN, SO, SR, ST, SW, TS, W, WC, WV, YO. Together they contain the 407 postcode districts used by the generator.

What is a ceremonial county?

Ceremonial counties are the counties used for lieutenancy and, historically, for postal addressing in England. Royal Mail dropped the requirement for a county line in 1996, and a correct postcode is now sufficient.

Can I filter the API to England only?

Yes. Call GET /api/v1/addresses/random?country=England to restrict generation to England, or pass a specific post town with ?location=<slug>.
